We examined the association of BDNF with general intellectual ability in 161 individuals including 53 early-onset patients with schizophrenia (EOS), 91 healthy biological relatives, and 17 relatives with major depressive disorder (MDD), using the Wechsler Intelligence Scales (WISC).
This study argues for a personalized prescription of antidepressants in Caucasian patients with major depressive disorder, based on the BDNF Val66Met polymorphism: SSRI should be preferred for Val/Val patients and SNRI/TCA for Met patients.
The aim of this study was to determine which hippocampal dentate gyrus and cornu ammonis subfields are altered in MDD compared to healthy controls and which subfields are affected by the BDNF Val66Met polymorphism and child adversity.
Our study included 2679 participants.Those with both the 5-HTTLPR s allele and the BDNF Met allele showed the highest risk of MD if they had previously experienced emotional (z = 2.08, p = 0.037), sexual (z = 2.19, p = 0.029) or any kind of childhood abuse (z = 2.37, p = 0.018).
Genotyping for BDNF and GDNF polymorphisms was performed in 298 patients with MDD who started 20 mg paroxetine per day and had their plasma concentrations measured after 6 weeks.
